Low Power Round-Robin Scheduling

چکیده
Energy consumption is becoming a crucial issue in the design of digital systems especially when considering portable and embedded systems due to their operational dependency on batteries. Since the processor is a major source of energy consumption, energy-aware scheduling strategies that decrease the CPU speed when possible enable to achieve significant energy savings. In this paper, we study the low-power scheduling under the RoundRobin policy which is widely available since it is part of the Posix1003.1b standard. An algorithm that computes the minimum processor speed for scheduling a job set under Round-Robin is provided. It relies on an efficient feasibility test that is also a contribution of this paper. Finally, we present mechanisms that are necessary for ensuring schedulability at run-time and that reduce consumption when jobs do not require their worst-case execution time. A counter-intuitive result shown in this study is that a job set might not be feasible at maximum frequency while being feasible with a lower frequency. This implies that even without interests in energy saving, lower frequencies have to be considered for feasibility.

The sustainability of hydraulic turbines was one of the most important issues considered by electrical energy provider experts. Increased electromechanical oscillation damping is one of the key issues in the turbines sustainability. Electromechanical oscillations, if not quickly damp, can threaten the stability of hydraulic turbines and causes the separation of different parts of the netw...

Recently, the Round Robin Arbiter (RRA), a crucial building block for high-speed switches/routers, receives a new attention with the advent of the Networks-on-chip (NoC). In this paper, we revisit the RRA design with NoC as the new target application platform. We propose the Hierarchical Round Robin Arbiter (HRRA) a high-speed, low-power, area-efficient, and scalable RRA for NoC applications, w...

In active networks, much processing power is required for the execution of packet processing code that is carried in or referenced by active packets. In high-bandwidth environments the processor performing this active processing poses a bottleneck. We present a processor scheduling algorithm called Feedback De cit Round Robin (FDRR) that reduces the overhead for fair scheduling and context swit...

Bluetooth is a wireless communication technology that provides short-range, small-size, low-cost, and low-power connectivity among mobile devices. The MAC protocol for Bluetooth is based on a Time Division Duplex (TDD) scheme, where the master determines channel access to all other slaves in the piconet. Hence, the polling scheme used by the master has a significant effect on the Bluetooth syst...
